What I Like
Doing a redesign of an amazingly popular site and it is never an easy thing to do. The easiest option is just to play it safe and make some minor tweaks. So initially what I like is that Rubin scrapped everything, but the color green from his old design.
The color scheme is fitting for the upcoming winter months (does anyone else want a thin mint?) and is very rarely seen. It doesn't expand on any new crazy layouts, but as mentioned a million times in other places, it's a blog so it doesn't have to.
The typography works.
The comments have a funky dropshadow which means I have to pay attention more to my comments and start fixing things around here.
What I Don't Like
I don't know why (have to think about it more), but the tabs bother me. Maybe they don't fit the rest of the site as well as they could, but something just seems out of place with them. Same goes for the background pattern.

The tabs or nav just bugs the f*ck out of me. Maybe it's just because the header graphic isn't as wide as the rest of the page. Don't like that at all. Wouldn't it just look a little better if it were the same width as the rest of the body? The bottom shadow/border of the nav just doesn't seem to flow with the right collumn. Other than my issue with the nav, the site looks great. I love the color scheme. The background and header images are all just so purty. Love it.

I think the tabs don't fit in because the body has fine gradient applied to the very edges, while the tabs don't...

I like the look of it, and I agree on the tabs, they don't fit. Another thing that bothers me is; the different look in different browsers. In IE for ex. The COMMENTS header has a line applied to it, but not so in Firefox. For IE the CSS also should be bug fixed (I only can see two thirds of the COMMENTS header).

Ok, I will be the ugly duckling here, I like the tabs! :) I really do. That was one of the first things I saw and kinda messed with them. I agree about the google thing. In "kinda" comes off as, "I want money!" I think the thing I have "tried" to learn about websites and advertisements is that you want to make money, of course, but design the site in which the advertisements don't really get in the way of the user experience. And don't push the ads onto your customers. Yea, that mentality might not increase click through rates, but they might respect you more :) btw - my advertisement comments are more general and not directly related to this site. I think the design is kickass and yes, I do think "wintergreen mint gum :)" shit, speaking of season changes, I need some kinda of october theme for my site. Gotta go....

Looking good to me. I agree with the tabs though. Not bad, but just something about them. I love the new look though. He's done a great job with it all.

Thanks to everyone for your comments thus far, it's nice to read the pros and cons. Some of the issues mentioned are in the process of being fixed -- since this is a personal blog, and not a corporate site, I felt it was OK to get it out in public (it's well overdue), and then fix the few remaining issues with things like IE, etc. As for the tabs, well, they are borrowed from an earlier design I did about a year ago for my contribution to the Cascading Style Sheets book, but the design never made it live on SB. They require some more tweaking, I agree, but their basic format is likely to stay around for a while... As for the Google ads, well, that's going to be an ongoing experiment. I've never had ads on the site until now, and they are only on the homepage, not the individual articles, which actually get all the traffic (the homepage, surprisingly, does not get nearly as much traffic as some of the popular entries). I'll continue to leave the ad block in place, and see how people react to it (I do agree it's a bit glaring however, but again, it's an experiment on a personal site, and it *does* come after the content on the page ;) Keep those comments coming!

Update #2

Rubin, You should put the google ads in the individual entries. Nothing wrong with making a little bit of money off the site you spent time to make popular. Also, know that you added the white border to the banner, it makes me think the tabs should line up with it. Andrew

i really like it. i love the way the edge of the box model is sharp yet simple!

*Lots* of web sites are starting to look eerily similar nowadays... fixed width, shadows, tabs, diagonal stripes, etc. I should be blaming myself, too, actually... my own site isn't original either. In fact, SuperfluousBanter's redesign made me redesign my own site as well. The web site is not bad, though. I like it. I believe it is a bit messy, though.

I don't like the blue mint with the green mint and the grey/black. Green can stay, but the blue just isn't doing it for me.
