Is it just me, or is there something quite derivative about the look of this deign? A touch of hicksdesign here, maybe a little hint of connex in there as well. It's undeniably clean and clear however - it works well, and the content is excellent. Nice site.

Enough is enough with this "looks likes John Hicks' work" malarkey. I mean, besides the fact that they're both using Lucidia Sans as the default font, the colour green and some white, what other similarities are there? The skip to content and text only links? The fact that he is using a nicely styled "comment box" too? Give me a break ... Mark's work is nothing like Hicksdesign or Connex. His site is highly original and works well. It's simple to naviagte, nice to look at and completely usable. I think it's a job very well done. Even if it does use green.

I think you both may need to read the comment guidelines. Rich - "Sorry, but where is the design in this site? Poor, very poor." isn't exactly constructive. The comment guidelines clearly states: ...allows for quality discussion on the design merits of the site. If their is something about the design you do not like, feel free to express your opinion, but please provide justification so that everyone may benefit. Your comment didn't do this. Please elaborate. Rich's mum - I think calling Rich a "twat" was unnecessary and certainly not the type of thing anyone would want on this site.

Jed, Very well said and I for one take your comments onboard and have to admit that I had not read the comment guidlines. I feel that a lot more could be done with the design of the site than just a green stripe at the top. I am all in favour of nice clean crisp design, but as far as I am concerned this show's a complete lack of imagination. I am in no way shape or form trying to be derogitary to Mark as I do like a lot of his work, this however, as far as I am concerned is poor.

Fair point Rich. Maybe if this site was taken on face value, then yes a "green stripe at the top" may not be seen as "imaginitive". I guess it comes down to how define design. If imagination is how you define design, that's ok. I define it as communication. If you'd like to drop me an email i'm more than willing to discuss what I was trying to achieve with the design. What is all this mindless drivel? I for one thought it was a place to give constructive comments about CSS driven web sites, NOT a place where people come to bicker. If you wish to do this Rich and Rich's mum please find an appropriate forum. Personally I find it hard to accept Rich's comments as it is the easiest thing in the world to criticise. Rich, I didn't want this to get personal, my sole purpose was to defend a friend of mine who was unecessarily attacked for a design which I and several others admire. Knowing Mark as I do and his background in design I felt your comments were unfair and far from constructive. Also a web site from a designers perspective should not only function well it should be aesthetically pleasing and suit the market it's intended for. This I feel Mark has completed on all levels. If you wish to see a few of my web sites then I've put a few up just now on my home web site. I don't pretend to have extensive CSS knowledge. Instead I tailor my web sites to my clients needs, some contain CSS, some are XHTML, some are Flash, HTML & CSS driven, some are purely HTML, it all depends on the clients requirements and budget.

Graham, I'm not getting personal nor am I attacking Mark personally as I have previousily stated I am mereley giving my own point of view. It strikes me that I am am the one being slated on here for just putting across my thoughts! You have hit the nail on the head with comment about 'clients requirements' and my clients are happy 9 times out of ten with the work I produce first time - that's what really counts, not whay any of us think on here. I find this all a bit laughable really because the one thing you have to do as a designer is not take criticism personally. I don't, I treat it as beneficial and something to learn from as I and I assume you and all of us do, is try to get better all the time. Client requirments and budget. Sums it all up really.
