What I Like
The white background. It just seems to do something for this site that other white backgrounds fail to achieve. I am sure it has to do with the dropshadow and the deep red used in the side column, but the white does its purpose and just stays out of the way. I just get a nice “clean” feeling when looking at this site.
What I Don't Like
The hover navigation with too many gradients involved. Just keep it red.

The hover navigation looks cool. The white background seems to look smoother than other white backgrounds do. But it's still white...
Julian
Might be my fault, but it just doesn't seem to render right in Firefox in GNU/Linux. The right menu bar isn't red, and the navigation bar is just an unordered list. Anybody experiencing this?

I had the same firefox problem, solved after refreshing two times. The FAQ footer is not aligned correctly. If the FAQ is not done, the link should be removed.
Peter
Yup, renders correctly under Firefox now. Sorry about that. I really like this site. Drop shadows are used modestly and complement the design well. One thing that bothers me a little is that the images (in the portfolio for instance) are not linked to. I'll admit it -- I'm an image clicker.

blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog blog ... oh no wait its just a portfolio that looks like a blog :) ...our site looks like that - oh no, wait, we did ours about 4 years ago!

And what's wrong if a site looks like a blog? :) How should it look like then? I like the clean design anyway ;)
Anelle
No Mark, yours doesn`t look like that. Your code is shoddy and the design is pretty poor to be honest.....
Alex
yreah i know it was done in 2000 - i just think that CSS sites like this should hilight people pushing the boundaries - not more blog style sites. seriously its getting boring dudes. mark
mark rush (http://www.newmediadesigns.co.uk)
I can definetely see Marks point. Honorable markup is not enough anymore, and anyone can do dropshadows and make it look like zeldman. Eric: pushing boundaries might not be what you want (even though I thought that was a part of a designers job). But do you really want a blog for your portfolio site? Do you really want to bombard your potential clients with useless stuff about your cat and photos from your latest trip? Im not saying the Kayem site does, but thats in general what most weblogs are about. And thats what I call distraction. Stop following recipes and start innovate.

Hi guys As the guy behind Kayem Design I thought I would just jump in here and clear a few things up! Firstly I didnt actually submit the site for critique, someone must have suggested it, but no matter - I welcome all critisicm good or bad. Secondly as a relative newbie to the world of CSS based designs the site is in part a showcase for my work (as well as working full time I also do freelance work). It also serves as a bit of a testing ground for ideas and code. The site does suffer from "blog-i-tus" but I guess thats just the evolution of a CSS designer. Who knows maybe the next re-design may steer in a different direction. But then, maybe not as im quite happy with the design and am working on implementing changes suggested here. Thanks Steve

Mark, no offense man, but you can always stop visiting the site -- if it's "getting boring dudes" then just go somewhere else. Preferably, my site :) I just don't think your criticisms are very constructive. I know that you focus a lot on making sites that are different, but not everyone is as far along as you are in their CSS development. Making innovative sites is a LOT of hard work and not everyone has the ability or the time to invest like you yourself might. Oh, and Mark, your site is broken on Firefox 1.0PR - the centered, text-heavy, two-column layout isn't always centered like a good blo ... I mean, site should be.

what is up with the menu in opera?
Russ
Nice work mate! Especially for a 'relative newbie' :)
Alex (http://www.coolpink.net)
Adam... lol yeah i know our good ol' s(h)ite sux - we're just so damned busy doing "the good stuff" for everyone else (a cliche i know - yet true) i keep checking back here in the hope that something inspires me - Heck if i dont complain then this blog phenomina will become the accepted norm - call me a cattle prod for the industry if you will :)
mark (http://www.newmediadesigns.co.uk)
Mark, yeah you're full of something related to cattle ... but it ain't the prod. hehe, that's a good one :)
Adam (http://www.weeklystandards.com)
Can't this fool just be deleted? he is hijacking the whole show. We are here to dicuss Kayem Design no? Exscuse me for being rude but Mark, why don't you just piss off and bore someone else?

Yet another pet-peeve-of-mine victim: y'all see the background as white because your computer's and browser's backgrounds are set to white. My browser isn't, as it is a sure way to check I *did* specify a background colour. Steve, as you're probably still reading this thread, just add a little colour rule. And your site will look *so* much better. Apart from that I wish I had as much talent in graphical design... ;)

Added Stephane, and thanks for pointing that out :)
Steve (http://www.kayemdesign.com)
That does make a lot of difference. *clap clap* Steve ;)
