What I Like

Thanks to the approximately 137 people who submitted this site over the weekend.

Well last month I had him as the featured site in the Gallery and now he has gone and changed things again. I like it. Not as much as the previous one, but improving on an all-time favorite is pretty near impossible.

I like the little graphical widget and there seems to be a use of whitespace that I cannot seem to grasp.

Arguably the best liquid site around now in my opinion.

What I Don't Like

The background graphic.

This site is nothing less than a classic. The fact that he changed seamlessly from MT to Texpattern was enough to blow me away. Enjoy this site, then go set up your own blog and marvel at it all over again. A master!

I absolutely LOVE Hicks' site! This site is the entire reason I decided to use CSS when I made a website.

Jeff: "This site is the entire reason I decided to use CSS when I made a website." ... it's a great site and it had the same effect on me too!

I love what this does as you resize it. I kind of agree about the background image. It looks fine at the top, but then, as you scroll down, the repetition grates a bit. It's hard to repeat complicated background images and not have that repitition look very obvious. Overall, I'm thinking that this is an improvement.

Loving the redesign. Improvement on the previous version too which was a tough task, especially with potential for a lot of criticism had the design not been so tight :) Good job :)

Liquid design? I don't see it! It is neither working in Firefox or IE. The Liquidity starts first when I stretch the page to more than 1024px. This is for sure not what I understand, as liquid design. But then the look and feel of the new design is awesome. The colour scheme is works well, the perfect use of white space. To place the background only to the right side is a great idea, which gives the feel of a three column layout. Due to this “trick” the site does not look like a blog. the design really “hicks”! I like it

Thanks for the feedback! The structure of the headings on some pages is very fair comment, something thats being sorted right now. The background image has been really divisive - we'll see how long it lasts!

It's awful in ie6 on any res other than 1024x768. Dosn't work in Mac IE. Images, navs, divs all over the place. As above, turn off styleing and it doesn't work in Firefox.

I'm using IE 6.0 (hit me with a stick later!) - and I was curious about the new, funky, side-graphic on the latest version of the Hicksdesign site. So, I was a bit disappointed when I couldn't see all of it!! My screen size is 1024 x 768 px, and the new Hicksdesign style didn't allow the IE width scrollbar to appear...and the edge of that nice image was cropped. Okay, I tried to ignore that, and just scroll down the page...I scrolled to the end of the page, and then scrolled up again. As I did this - that new side image tried to re-draw and consequently slowed the page loading down enormously.....shame! (That shouldn't happen in good, clean CSS mark-up right?) I like the colours used by Hicksdesign, the typo, and the liberal use of whitespace...and I always have, but I think this new design has been compromised by this new side-image. This is a GOOD site generally....and it looks like the designer is trying something new...and that is never a bad thing.
