Very very lovely, but I'm having serious performance trouble too. The problem occurs on Firefox, which (along with Mozilla) has always had poor performance with fixed background-images when scrolling. Combined with the alpha PNGs and Cleartype, it means I have to actually turn off the styles completely in order to read the page.
Thanks for the feedback. I haven't been able to verify any problems with firefox yet. It works fine even in Moz1.5 on a dial-up - so I assumed the mighty firefox would be ok with it :)
Any more comments would be helpful.
To clarify: Turning smooth scrolling on in Firefox will make the problem much worse. Cleartype doesn't seem to make a difference. The performance may depend a lot on the graphics card as well.
Jim, it happens for me to a lesser or greater extent with any site that uses a fixed background image. On yours it's more severe perhaps because the background-image is large and overlaid with translucent shadows.
The root of the problem is that the initial paint of the page is slow. Normally you wouldn't notice because the page only get painted once while it's loading, and then again if the canvas is resized. However, when fixed elements/backgrounds are in play the page needs to be completely repainted every time it is scrolled as well. On an otherwise speedy page this isn't noticeable, but the repaints quickly add up, particularly with smooth scrolling.
Since this problem has happened for me on four different computers with many sites and many different versions of Firefox (and Mozilla), I assumed that fixed backgrounds were just something Gecko on Windows was slow at. But sounds like other Fx users may be able to view it with no trouble...
(apologies for length)
The scrolling problem occours to me too. I'm using Mozilla 17a on WinXP. Example: there's a half second lag between the click on scroll bar arrow and the actual movement of the page.
Hope this little feedback helps.
Ahh yes, forgot about that. I un-fixed it. Still not sure which bg I like better. I'll probably change it a million more times before I'm happy.
Scrolling still wierd?
I recently went back and redesigned the site because I was not happy with a few things, namely the font widget, png transparency and scrolling bugs needed a re-think. Hopefully it is much improved now.

Keep your comments constructive please. Thanks!
Nice design, but the site stalled my browser when I loaded it up.

What browser? Anyone else having problems?

Forgot to add... perhaps an optional stylesheet that sets background-attachment: scroll?

Quite odd. I use the nightly build of Firefox and everything looks fine to me.

Alun, does this happen to you with any other sites? I've never encountered this before. Weird. I certainly didn't set out to break firefox :|

Alun, Neko: thanks. I've simplified the outer div bg image and removed the 'fixed' rule. Does it perform any better for you now?
