wtf. i think many of us frequenting this site, via rss or visiting it, produce works more due here in the vault than that.
It looks ok, nothing special, just another blog-style site. Where are the budding Hicks, Bowman & Santa Marias of us out there?! C'mon guys, we can craft more beauties than this; a challenge? Hai!
I like to include these layouts sometimes just to remind us that simple is sometimes the best route to go. I really liked the use of fonts in this design as well as the colors.
People have to realize that eventually there will be duplication in style, design, layout whatever. I find it very funny to see all these people complaining about "this site is the same old blah blah blah" get on with it. The site is styled nicely, laid out fine, and overall is a nice site. Not every site that is featured on these types of sites are going to be from the famous founders or leaders of CSS and it is becoming redundant reading about people complaning all the time just enjoy the fact that there are sites like this that acknowledge the time and hard work that developers put into their projects. I think it is a nice site and keep up the work Remi.
Thomas: Well, maybe you should notice that some of people that are complaining, actually, like the site... I am just saying that sometime it would be nice to see something not so great and clean, but instead original... And I am sure there is plenty of those...
The site is good.
Let us not forget we all get inspired froming seeing someones work and then we take it to another level (adding something fresh) to diversify and distinguish ourselves.
jfyi Jacob, something is wrong with the users link extra ")" after the address before the first slash "/".
Anatoly: I should have been more clear; I wasn't having a go at anyone in general but just from reading comments over the last little while of people saying negative or not productive comments with relation to peoples work, thats all. I wasn't having a go at anyone in particular.
While I'm not exactly sure what "the other side of the shark" means, it doesn't sound like a good thing. Sharks are never good ;)
Anyway, not that I'm saying quantity is better than quality...but I have tried to step up the amount of posted submissions slightly since I took over. If you'll look at the archives, in February there were 8 entries, January there were 10, and, and December 8. In March when I took over there were 18. I'm trying to post a wider variety of sites to give all types of people designs to look at. If you don't like what I'm posting, I'm sorry, but I'm doing the best I can. Anyway, I'm pretty much through defending what I do here. I try the best to please everybody, but obviously that's not always possible.
Getting listed here used to be like getting your face on the cover of Time magazine. It had an aura. That was the Vault brand. Only the best made it. Scrivs had a good eye for what we fresh and bangin', and only those sites that met his exacting standards made it through.
I guess what I'm saying is that we don't actually want more posts. We want fewer posts, and we want every single one of them to be freaking awesome.
We've got enough stuff to deal with in our RSS feeds already. Don't feel obligated to post regularly, because it just gives us more crap to sort through. If you go weeks without seeing a great design, that's perfectly fine. Don't post anything. We'll forgive you.
This will probably get your back up, but it needs to be said, if for no other reason than so you'll be aware of what pretty much everyone is thinking and feeling:
Jacob, you're killing the CSS Vault.
I say that for your own good. We all know it's happening, and you need to know it as well so you can do something about it.
I think it's a nice site, but it's not original... not meaning that he copied the design, just that this is a classic blog layout even though it is layed out nicely.
It would be nice to see some sites that are maybe not that stylish but have some original idea, after all CSSVault is supposed to "inspire creativity". ;)
Hey, I think this is a very nice design. Not only one nice design, but three with the style switcher.
jfyi, Jacob, something is wrong with the thumbnail.
Ted: Not everyone agrees with you, you know? Everyone wants something different, I like to visit CSSVault because sometimes it features original websites with nice ideas and those websites, actually, are not the nicest websites featured in here, but they are original and interesting.
I didn't agree with at least half of the sites Scrivs put on here and I don't agree with at least half of sites that Jacob has put here so far, so what? I mean, everyone has their preferences, even Jacob and if he likes the website he will put it on CSSVault; that will in no way affect the number of visitors.
Second they just have to look good to me. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so I do not expect every site that is posted to be liked by everyone or even anyone.
Read the About Page guys, where does it say that YOU must like the sites?
I personally like the amount of posts Jacob is making, as he said, he's posting a variety of sites. CSSVault was never about the mecca of css design, look at some of the truly shit entries posted in the past by Scrivs, mecca it is not.
The CSSVault is exactly that, a website showcasing CSS based designs. Not CSS based designs that 100% conform to the incredible "high" standards some of you seem to have.
If you don't like what Jacob is posting, go and create your own website displaying the css designs that you love, and are 100% conforming to your "high" standards, although I'm pretty sure some of your visitors would think some of the entries were shit.
I think some of the comments made against this particular positng are disgusting. Ted's comments in particular.
Where's you site Ted? Let us see your groundbreaking designs, so that we may know the standard that the CSS vault should adhere to.
Also, what's all that 'Time Magazine' bull? Lets not get carried away here... I think it's about time a few 'fevered ego's' around here took a timeout.
Exotic Melon - It's a nice site with not one but 3 good designs. That's a lot of hard work and a good job done.
I too like it, the color scheme is nice x3, professionally done and smart looking.
With regards to the vault in general, I also like to see a variety of entries and look forward to seeing something new, at least weekly. Just because a design is not "groundbreaking" does not mean it's not a worthy submission.
Seeing someone else's work inspires me and most of everyone's work is inspired by someone else. We know that the captains of CSS can design wonderful, groundbreaking and breathtaking sites, no doubt. But the rank and file out here use the vault not only for inspiration but for feedback, new techniques and "Oh, that's how you do that".
Comments need not be always positive, but there is a respectful way of critiquing a site without demeaning the design or the designer. It's all in our best interest to be courteous, fair and professional in our praise and criticism.
Peace.
This is a very nice layout IMHO. I don't understand the rude reactions. Sure it's a 'blog layout'. But hey... people... psssst! it _IS_ a blog!
There's a classic form-follows-function here. Blogs tend to have more or less the same layout scheme all the time. The difference between various blogs is the way design elements are applied to it. Some look good, some don't. I'm sure it would be really innovative and creative to come up with a radically different layout on a blog but it will be less easy to read most probably.
I'd say take a site for what it is first and then look at the way it's been designed. This particular entry looks like a pretty good blog template to me. Therefore: thumbs up!
Nice site, a lot of hard work's gone into it.
A general observation: I am not a techie in this field, but off late I've noticed most of the Valid XHTML and CSS sites tend to have a similar layout, Could it be that in order to make the code perfect people are compromising on the result, all I see is just changed color schemes and different graphics. Are all the sites going back to the 90's boxy look?
It's interesting to note that many of the people that are criticizing this sites like this (which are EXCELLENT, btw) lack any real design talent themselves (as shown by Anatoly and Justin, btw Justin. Gradient Happy are we? ) or simply don't have a URL linked to their name.
This site is quite nice. Sure, a couple minor accessibility and semantic quibles, but overall a good design.
Jacob - You're doing a good job. One criticique though; Scrivs usually posted why he posted whatever site it was, he lauded the good and pointed out the bad. You don't. You need to. Maybe you need to distance yourself from the old Vault and make it something unique to your character?
btw, Yes. I am back. I got over my mild annoyance at this site possibily turning commerical (it will, I know, but thats life, its ok)
I've actually been meaning to start critiquing the sites I post. I've had a whole lot to do lately so I haven't had as much time as I would like. Hopefully within the next month I can start critiquing the work myself though.
And no, it is not going to turn commercial. I have no plans to sell the site or commercialize it.
ever since Scrivs sold the vault, the level of qaultiy designs have dropped. I remember when sites like sprint,vh1,bright-creative,hicksdesign ect were coming in. "High Standard" sites.
Now it seems like everyone and his dog are featured here, a place for uni grads to get more hits on their sites, even though they look like "shit"
I' don't see the vault ever again, as long as jacob is behind the wheel..this place is just going to crumble.
The problem with design is that it's all in the eye of the beholder anyway. It also seems that most CSS showcase sites seem to showcase the same sites so I guess there's this common 'taste' in what's 'good design' and what isn't. Apparently there aren't any 'better' sites being created / submitted?
I agree with Jacob this comment section is for commenting on the site, not how CSSVault is being run or how Scrivs did this and did that, if you haven't noticed by now Scrivs does not run the site anymore so to expect the same reults and critiques is out of the question....I always enjoy coming to these sites to check out whats new and fresh, sometimes the submissions will look the same, or be featured some where else but the bottom line is GET ON WITH IT. Quit having a go at Jacob, if it is such a burden then do not visit the site. People use this site as inspiration and as a learning tool, not as a forum to bash or voice opinions of how it is operated. I feel like I'm in grade school again reading some of these posts. Sorry jacob for adding to the cause as I know it will probably just fuel some people to basj more, but that wasn't my intention, just sick of all the complaining.
I think the only thing on this site that has gone downhill are people's attitudes. I used to look up to the people who visited this site, in fact, i strived to be you guys. I am disgusted by what this place is becoming.. you guys aren't content with anything, all you do is complain. Wake up and smell the coffee guys, things change in life, please adapt and stop bitching. There is nothing wrong with the submissions Jacob has been adding. If anything, you guys should be happy to see new content more often.
So they aren't ground-breaking designs, big whoop! How about you help those young designers who are just now getting into CSS, who in the future could be the very people all you guys think are lacking from these postings. I really think you need to show more support to those of us getting started, helping us out, instead of just complaining about something that wont change.
Anyways, onto this design. I think it is a nice refreshing look to an old style. Yes it uses the grunge look, well executed I might add, but also gets a makeover by the background and the colors. It is also the standard 1 column layout, but it looks good, and the content flows well with it. I think sites like this belong in CSS vault as they are a testiment to what good CSS design is. If you guys are only looking for groundbreaking designs, i think you will be very dissapointed with anything that is put up on the site. Sometimes inspiration comes from viewing a slightly different version of something done a million times.
I hate to be cliche here, but if you don't have anything nice and constructive to say, please just pass over the posting and wait for something you deem as groundbreaking.
"ever since Scrivs sold the vault, the level of qaultiy designs have dropped."
Sometimes I wonder about the intellect of some of the people who frequent this site and complain about what is posted.
There are three main sites that showcase CSS design.
CSS Vault
Stylegala
CSS Beauty
Traditionally, (pre-jacob G), these three sites would showcase the same sites, at around the same time. Nothing has changed. They still do show the same sites, at approximately the same time. The only major difference are the people commenting on them.
David Jones, I suggest you get a clue and hush. The only difference between Scrivs and Jacob G are people like you logging on and generally being idiots.
I recommend that moderation begin and comments be limited to the site at hand. If people don't like it, then they don't have to visit.
Perhaps what the vault needs is a forum, a neutral place where anything can be discussed. Entries deserve better than to be tarnished by this sort of trolling and flaming.
Also, in my view, a cssvault feature is about more than just looks - it's always interesting to see how other designers came up with their markup and their css. There's more to them than meets the eye.
