What I Like

Not a huge fan of all that blue, but it's Disney so we need lots of color, right? It took me some time and thinking to put this site in I think more because I am an adult (who am I kidding?) looking at a kid's site. From the user perspective this is a great looking design for kids. The color, typography, and imagery all speak fun and I think this is where the design excels.

What I Don't Like

I don't like the separate navigation scheme because to me I would think the upper one would be the most important since you want users to explore the sections of your site.

It's not really a kid's site. It's an online store. It's target audience are parents buying toys for their kids.

I really appreciate how they took the time to spell out why they went ahead and did the redesign as well as use proof in results to further their case. It sort of resembles the way that Mozilla showed the coding guidelines of their new site. I want to start seeing this as a trend throughout the larger companies such as Yahoo and this Disney site. Not only does it make me happy, but it also demonstrates that the standards are here to stay.

Here we go again. This is the second vault site in recent weeks that falls apart when I use FireFox to view it. The other site was TMX Communications. Both sites display without a problem when I view them with IE6. Can anyone offer any insight? Why would these two sites present problems for FireFox -- at least on my computer, running WIndows XP Pro SP1 -- but not for IE6? Please offer some thoughts. Here are the FireFox particulars: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040913 Firefox/0.10.1

It's good to see a large company like this embrace standards -- much less, it's nice to see a company like this serve up flash appropriately. I like the cartoon imagery, and the structure of the document, but my gripe is really about the color. To me, I actually like the strong blue -- but that doesn't seem like a kid site with strong blue color scheme. It's Disney, so it fits it's identity well, and that I think is much more important -- but when I think of kids sites, I think warm colors that have more 'pop' to them. Blue seems mellow to me, and induces a lazy reaction - not at all like kids who are quite wound up. Artwork for Nickelodean (spelling?), cartoon network, kids choice awards -- those, and their print ads. all seem to be full of orange and yellow and pink -- very little blue as the main focus. But again, it fits their theme and it's a well designed, and well thought out site, so this is nit-picking at best.

That's odd since I only use Firefox so if it broke on my browser it definitely wouldn't get in the Gallery. I just checked my version and we are using the same ones. What res are you running?

I think the Disney site is just too busy. There are too many logos, colors, recognizable faces, etc... for an outstanding effect.

I agree with Clay, above - is the purpose of the Vault to showcase beautifully formed CSS, or beautifully designed sites that happen to use CSS? If the former, fine, the Disney site qualifies and props to Andy Clarke, but if the latter, then this is just another overly busy, overly colourful, not especially noteworthy corporate ecommerce site. Specifics: the text is blocky and sometimes extremely small; the product photos are very small and it's difficult to see the details; there's too much content and not enough space; the navigation is all over the place (four different navs?); some of the contrast could be improved (white on yellow?).
